Hawes Debunks Global Warming, Takes On Al Gore

Former University of Washington and newly drafted Sacramento Kings center Spencer Hawes is going to fit in just fine in his new home. Hawes is a hardcore conservative, and should feel at home with Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the most prominent Republican Governors leading the state. In fact, Hawes said he "loves" him.

But Conservative status aside, there's one major disagreement between Hawes and the Governator. And that would be global warming. Hawes took up the subject during a public debate class he took during his yearlong stay at UW.

In it, he said, he denied the entire existence -- and human cause -- of global warming. When asked for his take on Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, Hawes said, "It's one big lie. I talked about that in my opening speech -- it's the media's liberal overexaggeration of just about everything."
People can certainly believe whatever they choose to. But perhaps Hawes should have taken some more science classes during his brief tenure at UW. I can see this dyed-in-the-wool Conservative being a fan favorite from the beginning in Arco Arena. It's a match made in heaven.

Has Hawes stopped to think that maybe debate is his true calling? He can start off his rookie season by sparring off with Al Gore. Now that's something I'd like to see.

Why should he have taken more science classes? He no doubt took as many as the "Goracle" took.

actually, Gore pretty much refuses to debate anyone on the topic, which is a smart way to keep proselytizing to his sheep.

I like the "kid needs to grow up" comment from the guy with a Grateful Dead logo.

Right on doooood.

Funny, you all insinuate that he's ignorant, but were you aware that Mars, Jupiter's water-bearing moons, and Neptune are all ALSO experiencing Global Warming?

Could someone like, say, the Head of NASA, possibly know more and have less reason to exaggerate this topic than Al Gore? Cause last i checked, the head of NASA felt like we were blowing this out of proportion and called us out as arrogant for determining the "Best" climate for our planet to survive in.

WAKE UP PEOPLE! GLOBAL WARMING WANTS YOUR MONEY, NOTHING MORE!

On top of all this, even if we had 100% support to stop global warming, good luck telling China, India, and Brazil the same. All technology we stop using will be used 5x as much over there, so if we were REALLY serious about global warming, we'd be taking global initiatives, as opposed to milking middle-class america for $10,000 more on Hybrid cars.

bullshit.

Uh, no. Learn something about how the government works before you run your mouth. The NASA Administrator (Michael Griffin) is a political appointee--he works for President Bush and is paid to carry out Bush's policies. The actual SCIENTISTS at NASA think he's an idiot.

From a June 1 ABC News online story (http://www.abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=3229696):

Griffin's comments immediately drew stunned reaction from James Hansen, NASA's top climate scientist at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York.

"It's an incredibly arrogant and ignorant statement," Hansen told ABC News. "It indicates a complete ignorance of understanding the implications of climate change."

Hansen believes Griffin's comments fly in the face of well-established scientific knowledge that hundreds of NASA scientists have contributed to.

"It's unbelievable," said Hansen. "I thought he had been misquoted. It's so unbelievable."

As for Gore not debating anyone, he appeared before TWO Congressional committees in one day back in March and made climate denial hacks like Jim Sensenbrenner, Joe Barton and Jim Inhofe look like morons.

why would you listen to the head of NASA on the subject? He is an administrator of a government agency who's job is to send billion dollar boondoggles with little scientific purpose into space, and oh yeah, the agency sucks at its job. I don't know where your getting your info about neptune, mars, and jupiter's moons but that has nothing to do with C02 levels on EARTH!

Your argument is dumb, first you say there is no need to do anything, then you claim there isn't anything we could do anyway. Your comment is merely unsubstantiated rhetoric decorated with statements which appear to be scientific, when in fact they are not.

If China, Brazil and India all got on board your opinion wouldn't change. If the NASA administrator got on board your opinion wouldn't change. You would find other reasons to stubbornly maintain your ignorance. You have no legs to stand on.

Ignoring long term consequences for short term benefits is a shockingly stupid behavior that has caused the down fall of many societies, and will undoubtedly cause a great deal of harm to our globabl one if political zealots like yourself continue to ignore evidence and science and instead believe what the companies with the most to lose continue to spit out there.

Ah yes, citing 19-year-old, minimally college-educated people for their political views. Next I think I'm going to Stephen Hawking for his pick on USC or Texas next year.

I don't know all of the facts regarding global warming, nor do I claim to or believe I ever will know all of the facts. There is one thing that really gets me about people who argue so passionately against global warming. What's the purpose?

Suppose global warming does not exist and we are all being overly cautious.... are there any negative consequences to being overly cautious with the environment we live in? Compare that to the consequences of wrongly believing that global warming does not exist.

Yeah, I'll take being safe over sorry. Who cares if some companies make money off of it? People have made money in much more sinister ways.

Anonymous said...

there are negative consequences to overblowing global warming. things like shifting resources from providing education and fighting poverty towards government subsidies of ethanol fuel producing farms. someone named one already, the expense of hybrids on the middle class, its not only good that people are spending money on them, that money is lost to spend on other things, and it is usually not the plasma screen tv purchase that gets left out. still, we should try to protect our environment as much as reasonably possible while balancing it with some negative effects of going overboard.

Alex said...

Thanks to Jake, CLV, and even the previous anonymous post for applying educated and considerate thought to the subject.

Here in Canada (It's ok, I can take it) we find it hard to believe people with such regressive views exist. It's kind of comical actually, in a sad way.

Anonymous said...

Um, has anyone stopped to consider that this was a debate class, and in order to have a debate someone has to argue for both sides? I am not saying he doesn't hold the belief that global warming is a myth, but I am saying until I hear a comment from him outside the context of a class debate, I will withhold the rush to judgement.

Rupert Entwistle said...

I'm no expert either, but I went into this thing with a pretty natural bias toward the left and Gore's side. Then I found out that one of the most innovative guys of our generation, Ray Kurzweil (you probably know him from inventing the synthesizer) thinks it's all phooey too. I included some snippets below. The point is, just because you care about the environment, you don't need to hop on board without giving it a second thought.

Ray Kurzweil: None of the global warming discussions mention the word "nanotechnology." Yet nanotechnology will eliminate the need for fossil fuels within 20 years. If we captured 1% of 1% of the sunlight (1 part in 10,000) we could meet 100% of our energy needs without ANY fossil fuels.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't see any disasters occuring in the next 10 years from this. However, I AM concerned about other environment issues. There are other reasons to want to move quickly away from fossil fuels including environmental pollution at every step and the geopolitical instability it causes.

Luke said...

Ray Kurzwell and his nanotachnology are nice, but that doesn't change the fact that global warming is real!

There is no doubt that the climate is changing, and that we have/are contributing to that change by production of greenhouse gasses (i.e. CO2).

The onset of spring in the high arctic is rapidly advancing each year, the southwestern U.S. is experiencing ever worsening drought, and minimum daily temperatures are rising worldwide.

The effects on more susceptible animals, mainly amphibians, is already being seen.

Whether or not you think we have contributed to this problem matters little. In the next 20 years we will all be forced to deal with climate change. If we don't start now it will get even worse before it gets better.

This is about personal and corporate decisions, not throwing money at a problem so it will go away.

Take public transport, ride your bike, walk, conserve energy, recycle, etc., etc. It's really pretty simple.

I recently completed bachelors degrees in mechanical engineering and applied physics and am currently pursuing advanced degrees. I am part of a research project for the Department of Energy which is investigating the use of nano technology in solar cell's to make them more efficient. I can assure that counting on nanotechnology to solve our societies woes concerning climate change would be foolish. Predicting the things technology will be bring about twenty years from now is rarely correct.

Raymond Kurzweil is a very intelligent man, but he is an engineer/inventor, not a climatologist. He is an avid science fiction fan who believes nano robots will some day make him immortal. His predictions are a little out there, and should not be used as a way to evaluate the legitimacy of the global warming threat.

i am in favor of all attempts at living within and caring for our environment.

i think that the 'global warming phenomena' deserves exacting research, serious thought, and well considered action, if action is called for. and which of these can any government agency be trusted to provide?

government agencies are mistaken at best, extremely harmful at their worst, so how can we expect them to be part of the solution?

the answer?? we are the solution. let us study, let us think, and let us take considered action, when needful. the government ain't gonna do it for us, WE have to do it, and speak out, too.

Anyone who believes in global warming is simply an uneducated fool.

The facts are there if you look. They are not there when you simply swallow the propaganda you're being fed.

Al Gore is like a slapstick comedy. It would be embarrassing to admit that I agreed with any of his rediculous "truths".

Once again, it's amazing how easily the common folk are persuaded to believe such nonsense.

One poster said, "Suppose global warming does not exist and we are all being overly cautious.... are there any negative consequences to being overly cautious with the environment we live in?"

YES! Like even more emission restrictions on cars and trucks (R-12 refrigerant for one),higher gas taxes, etc. The government has and will continue to impose more restrictions on companies who will in turn, pass the cost on to us.

The the people who are running our country and most of our states are absolute morons.

We're in big trouble.

You don't need a doctorate in any kind of science to answer the global warming question. All you need is some good old-fashioned logic. Is it more likely that the 6.5 billion and exponentially growing human race is having an effect on the planet or not? You think that throwing those tons of pollutants in the atmosphere will have no effect on the planet? Is it safer to assume that we are having an effect on the planet and that god forbid saving energy and buying cleaner products is actually a better way to go than ignoring the potentially hazardous consequences of continuing to live in ignorant extravagance? Is it really too much to ask a human being to conserve some energy? I for one will err on the side of safe assumption because, hey, turning off the light when you aren't using it, or not driving a hummer when you are just driving yourself isn't really too much to ask. Is the market forcing you to buy a hybrid? Last I checked, no.

More compelling news just broke about Rev. Michael Wilbon on another site. Global warming is an exciting debate, but this is almost more shocking than the Da Vinci Code. It will make you question everything you've ever known to be true!

How incredibly tragic and revolting that this matter is still open for debate.

Apparently only "morons" believe in global warming . . . and yet all around us, evidence is mounting for even the most ideologically-blinded pundit. The icecaps are beginning to melt, glaciers are vanishing across the Earth, climate patterns are changing, storms are strengthening. This year is already the second-warmest on record. You don't have to be a scientist to notice these things. You just have to have something approaching an open mind. Like another poster said, it simply makes sense. CO2 traps sunlight and causes a greenhouse effect. We've been pumping it into the skies for almost 200 years on a scale rarely seen in the Earth's history. What do you think the impact is going to be?

Another attempt at logic: why would any major power group have a sinister agenda to improve emissions or tend to the environment? Who benefits in a big way? Now ask yourself this: who benefits from fighting emission caps and denying global warming? Right. Big business. Conservatives favouring less government.

As for the poster who mentioned nanotechnology: are you serious? First of all, harmful emmissions remain in the atmosphere for a hundred years before they disintigrate. In fact, leading scientists recently announced that the global warming phenomenon would continue for at least a thousand years, even if we take steps right now. Secondly, even if we do perfect nanomachines in 20 years, that does not mean our world is not warming right now. Third, are nanomachines going to miraculously replace every power plant and car overnight? And how would these nanomachines power our societies, anyway? This is a ridiculous argument by someone unwilling to accept reality.

And about the arrogance of assuming one climate or another is best for us: well, we're the ones who are changing the climate - if this was a natural phenomenon there'd be a point to that assertion, but it isn't, and we have a responsibility to reduce our catastrophic impact on the environment. More species are going extinct more quickly than at any other point in the last few hundred million years (yes, including the extinction of the dinosaurs). Meanwhile, climate change will ravage the agriculture industry, flood our cities, displace millions of refugees, lead to increased deserts and reduce natural resources, among other things. Millions may die - at best. We have a responsibility to do something about it, and that's not arrogance.

Listen, this is only a debate among the uninformed. At a recent UN conference, over 90% of scientists agreed that global warming was happening, and caused by man. Global warming is as much a controversy as the Big Bang or the theory of Evolution. I wish people would pull their heads out of the sand, stop bickering and manufacturing false facts and start doing something about the problem before it's too late.

Anonymous said...

Well, hold on now, previous anon. The main issue isn't whether or not the planet is getting hotter at the moment - it's whether or not human action is the major contributing cause. The argument of most of those who refute "global warming" is that the effects you mention ("icecaps are beginning to melt, glaciers are vanishing across the Earth") would happen regardless of our actions. Whether or not that's true I don't personally feel informed enough to comment. But you're not really addressing those concerns, until your last para ("and caused by man"), which doesn't really have any evidence.

Just pointing that out.

When the fresh and salt waters collide and shift and Europe is too cold in the winter to heat homes past freezing... well the earth doesn't care what your politics are. This can be corrected, with global cooperation and educated politicians, ball players and even NASA politico hos ceasing the pimping party line for their bosses. ha ha. a variation on a bumper sticker theme: "losing faith in humanity, one basketball player at a time"

To me this sounds more like preference. I have nothing wrong with more emission restrictions, nor do I have a problem with gas taxes (hopefully it will reduce the amount of gas that we consume).

Even if we are truly "wasting" money on global warming, which I don't agree with, there are sooooo many other things that we are wasting money on that I would rather start with those things than with global warming. How does $19 billion in Iraq sound? When I think about what $19 billion towards education or fighting poverty could do it boggles my mind.

Again, I am still waiting for some truly negative consequences to wrongly believeing in global warming. I don't believe that not being able to spend money on other things is a drawback to investing in global warming, because there is no gaurantee that that money would spent on something worthwhile.

Didn't this start out as a post about how Spencer Hawes is an idiot? As a die hard Kings fan, I think we should revert to said subject.

Just b/c one professor at UVA and one Bush political appointee doesn't believe in global warming doesn't change the hundreds of leading climatologists who agree that increased CO2 levels lead to higher temperatures.

It's pretty basic if you have an open mind and are at least a little bit educated.

I am a regular reader of your article. And I am very impress with your blog upon Global Warming. Now I am also write a blog upon effects and causes of Global Warming. This blog is collection of news & reviews like the study found that global warming since 1985 has been caused neither by an increase in solar radiation nor by a decrease in the flux of galactic cosmic rays. Some researchers had also suggested that the latter might influence global warming because the rays trigger cloud formation.
