USC Comes To Westwood, Sticks It To UCLA

USC Football has been running on all cylinders in recent years, and they're on top of their game in all facets - including those off the field. Simply put, they're sticking it to their cross-town rivals, the UCLA Bruins.

UCLA fans leaving campus on Gayley Avenue towards Wilshire have been forced to reckon with the constant reminder that they've played second fiddle in the city this decade. USC has put up a billboard smack-dab in the middle of Westwood, and they aren't mincing words. "You would have, if you could have," the copy says, and it's accompanied by a picture of golden boy Matt Leinart and their website. Whether or not UCLA students and alumni would have wanted to attend USC is a dubious question. Football envy may be in full bloom for Bruin fans, but UCLA is clearly a better academic school. It would be true though, UCLA would have beat Utah last week if they could have, and they all wish that had happened.

Before you slam USC for being unclassy, it should be noted that UCLA put up taunting billboards themselves during their semi-glory days of the 1990's, where they beat USC in their head-to-head match-up six years running. Either way it's a great application of the rivalry, and the next move belongs to UCLA. a "13-9" billboard, anyone?

It's going to be a long, long time before UCLA has the upper hand in that rivalry. When it comes to blue chip recruits, Pete Carroll has a stronghold in Southern California, not to mention much of the entire United States.

I got into both UCLA and USC and picked UCLA. It is a much better school in a MUCH better area. Who wants to go to school in the ghetto?
Ask most UCLA students to show you their acceptance letters to USC and they'll be happy to show you. If you ask USC students to show you their acceptance letter to UCLA, they'll start talking about football!!

Ucla is not clearly better academically than USC. Incoming USC students have higher average SAT scores and they are only two spots from each other in the U.S. News rankings. I'm not saying USC is much better or anything, but UCLA isn't clearly superior academically.

Robert said...

Also, USC being in the ghetto is important for that part of L.A. USC is really involved in the ghetto to help improve lives with philanthropy. Ucla folks are more caught up with being upwardly mobile, whereas USC folks are already there, so are caught up in helping other people. Being in the ghetto offers an opportunity to contribute to society in a meaninful way. It's funny that the public school, ucla, is trying to be snobby.

Robert said...

Finally, I'm sure students at both universities have acceptance letters from the other, since they're at a similar academic standard. There's no shame in many ucla students not being able to afford USC, therefore making it commonplace for them to be able to show their acceptance letters to USC while attending ucla. Like the sign says, "you would have if you could have." ;)

Clearly, UCLA is the bigger academic school. One need only be a casual reader of the USNews and World Report rankings over the past 10 years to understand this truism. In fact, USC grads keeps warm in the winter by burning their UCLA rejection letters. Further, the notion that one would go to attend school behind ghetto b/c their football team is better is absurd.

Anonymous said...

look at us news and work report for graduate schools. i went to SC for engineering, ranked 7th suckahs!

Anonymous said...

Myles, if you've really read the rankings, you'd see that USC has gone up dramatically over the past decade. The 2008 rankings has UCLA tied with UM-Ann Arbor at 25 while USC is at 27. That's not clearly better.

Also, USC's LAS school still lags behind but our more techinical, profession related schools like Business and Engineering are more highly ranked.

Anonymous said...

Got into both UCLA and USC with scholarships and went to UVa instead. Go Hoos!

Anonymous said...

Clearly the better academic school? Clearly, you didn't go to either because both would have taught you to do a two second fact check. Otherwise you may make an obvious and embarassing error and look like a, well I don't have to tell you

Anonymous said...

Did anybody actually LOOK at the billboard? It's a picture of the "Bush Push" from the USC-Notre Dame game. They've superimposed a joe-schmoe fan over Reggie Bush. It's a billboard for Trojan TV - All Access. I think they're trying to say that 'Trojan TV gives you so much access that you'll feel like part of the team, and if you were part of the team you would have pushed him too.' Geesh. Relax people.

Anonymous said...

Well it seems to me that if you look at the US News Rankings, USC didn't start the upward rise until their football team began winning national championships. The increased publicity probably helped them attract better students. Anyways how they get anyone to pay 40K to go to school in the hood is beyond me. Oh by the way, Vince Young owns you all!!

Anonymous said...

Why doesn't the billboard feature proud Trojan Football Alum O.J. Simpson?

Anonymous said...

It started with President Sample's hiring. I believe it was the early 90s.

Besides, football success doesn't have anything to do with academics. The SEC easily has the worst schools compared to the other major conferences. Major powers like Oklahoma are poorly ranked. I couldn't find LSU anywhere on their site. Probably unranked considering how stupid their fans are.

Bruce said...

Growing up in a suburban beach city (Torrance), my time in the "ghetto" opened my eyes to a world far different than what I knew and was as valuable as any class I took at SC. I'm proud of where SC is located and the outreach the school has done to help improve the lives of local residents, especially children, around the school. I think ucla fans, students and alumni always look particularly shallow and unworldly when dismissing an entire section of the city which is full of good people who work hard to get by.

Anonymous said...

well your alumni sure aren't proud of the location, time and time again giving the school money and trying to move the school out of that area.

Anonymous said...

"well your alumni sure aren't proud of the location, time and time again giving the school money and trying to move the school out of that area."

Um, what?

The 1960s are over. There is zero talk about moving USC.

HOW IS UCLA A BETTER ACADEMIC SCHOOL?

I'm a USC student and before you think I'm bias, hear me out. I know what it's like going to huge public universities where you are just a number, and the truth is, those schools accept almost ANY in-state student, regardless of mediocre GPA and test scores. USC has such high admission standards and the degrees earned are worth tons more than UCLA ones after graduation. I don't know how you can say UCLA is better academically, that's just ridiculous and the statistics do not back it up.

Don't you mean "University of Spoiled Children?" LOL

UCLA/USC they are both about the same. They both suck academically when compared to Cal

Anonymous said...

Check the facts:

In the U.S. News & World Report surveys on top academic universities across the nation, UCLA is among the Top 4 public universities and top 25 overall. UCLA has five times as many individual academic departments ranked in the Top 10 as its cross-town rival from USC. In fact, UCLA had over 60 more departments ranked in the Top 20 in the annual academic survey. Several UCLA academic departments rank with the Ivy Leagues in overall recognition and prestige.

Anonymous said...

Nice extremely distorted statistic there. Yeah, UCLA is in the top 25. They are tied with another school for 25th (statistically 25.5). USC is 27th. Wow, one is in the top 25 and the other isn't. It must be so much better. Idiot.

Anonymous said...

Poor crybaby! "Statistically 25.5!" Duh, I go to USC. Me like football. I didn't get into UCLA, so I say UCLA sucks. Duh.

I am very proud of my degree from USC, and from what my maid has told me, I didnt miss much by during down UCLA. If I needed a public education I would have gone to Cal, not the forever runner-up. Anyone need to see the acceptance letter? I got in without applying to that dump, go figure.

Maybe I should re-type my feelings in 4 different Asian dialects so the student at UCLA can read it

Anonymous said...

What's extremely distorted is the fact that you actually believe USC is not that far behind UCLA based on what idiotic rankings state. Oh wait, if a credible, major media publication states something, then it must be true! Idiot.

The fact remains, in your heart of hearts, deep down, you really know UCLA is that much better and will always be better than justSC. And that's eating away at you! Whooooo! Suck it. (Literally.)

I'm reading these posts with open eyes. I'm a senior at UNC (one of the few students not from NC, but from Brooklyn, NY) and am looking at both schools to earn my M.F.A. Everything I believe in says that I should go to UCLA (quality of school, price, the fact that its public (I can't stand Dook), the nicer neighborhood, essentially everything.) Everything tells me to go to UCLA except for the fact that I'm going for my MFA in Film Production and USC's program is infinitely better than UCLA's. Any thoughts?

Anonymous said...

Um, too bad no one outside of college football fans and the United States' even knows about USC. UCLA is prestigous worldwide - USC is not. It may get there someday but for now, you can't compare the two - get over it. Believe it or not, prestigous names matter (would you hire a Harvard grad or a Whitworth grad?).

Anonymous said...

Regarding SAT scores, the figures reported by USC include approximately 80% of their incoming freshmen every year. (gee, I wonder what 20% they omitted?)

Anonymous said...

Being a great college is about more than just academics and athletics. In fact, just ask TIME Magazine and Princeton Review who awarded USC as their College of the Year in 2000. Long before the football team was any good.

Anonymous said...

"UCLA is prestigous worldwide - USC is not"

USC has more international students than any other university in the country. Look it up...it's true.

DaveG said...

This is how the rivalry works- USC has football, UCLA has basketball. That's the way it is, and save for the rare Gary Beban/Mike Bibby moment, that's always the way it will be.

You guys are all pussies--
"ooooh, clearly my school is better",
"no, clearly my school is better!look at a magazine",
"no ,look at this magazine"

YOU'RE BOTH GATOR BAIT!*

*although UCLA does suck too badly to get the opportunity to eat shit from the gators' repeat national championship team.

Ian said...

Ah, Steve Sample, the great illusionist. As a private school, USC can calculate their incoming SAT statistics however they please. It's well known that USC counts the best scores across multiple sittings (my SAT score, for example, would have gone up 40 points had UCLA calculated it this way). Additionally, USC doesn't include the SAT scores of legacies, athletes, and "special circumstance admits" (ie, kids from disadvantaged backgrounds) when they report their SAT scores to US News. At UCLA, that is equivalent to 40% of their incoming freshman class.

Any guesses as to what UCLA's reported SAT scores would be if they didn't include the majority of the bottom 40% of their SAT achievers?

There's a reason the 25,000 undergrads at UCLA all got into USC, but very few undergrads at USC got into UCLA. Trojans just aren't as smart. And, for what it's worth, if you got into both, but decided to spend 100K more to go to USC, then you really are too stupid to attend UCLA.

Anonymous said...

I think you need to learn the meaning of "clearly". U.S. News Rankings aren't perfect but they are the standard that most refer to in college rankings. UCLA is currently ranked #25 and USC #27. Maybe UCLA was clearly a better school in the past but not anymore. I laugh when UCLA people use the "better academically" card which no longer applies. UCLA people are living in the past when they keep saying UCLA is clearly a better school. UCLA may be in a better area but Westwood isn't what it used be...sure there are many places to eat, theatres, etc but there seems to be a homeless person on every block and the sidewalks are just filthy with a stench of urine from the homeless problem there. USC is on an upward rise whereas UCLA seems to be at a plateau. That should worry UCLA folks. What will you poor Bruins have to hang on to if USC actually passes UCLA in the rankings? Then football won't be the only thing UCLA will be jealous about. Also, way to embarass the PAC 10 with that awesome 44-6 loss to Utah. Enjoy the 13-9 celebration for another 2 months because that will be wiped out as well very soon.

Anonymous said...

Both schools are good by Top 25 standards...when you can get into IIT, MIT or Caltech...then you can talk about exceptional academic quality. As Freakonomics would suggest, most of the Top 25 are populated with kids from socially advantaged families...and that includes UCLA wonks. When you can show me your Caltech acceptance, you have an exceptional mind. Until then, you are arguing who has the most nickels when someone else has the bag of gold.

Re: the USNews rankings, they're not to be taken too seriously. They've been criticized for being heavily skewed towards factors that benefit private universities, much to the detriment of public schools. Doesn't it strike anyone as odd that not a single public university appears in the top 20? With no disrespect towards their alumni and friends, does it really make sense that schools like Rice, Vanderbilt and Emory appear above schools like Berkeley, Michigan and Virginia?
Point is, USC may have improved its position in these rankings, but they're generally meaningless.
Moreover, to the USC student(alum?) who said that "I know what it's like going to huge public universities where you are just a number, and the truth is, those schools accept almost ANY in-state student", you should check your facts. Last time I checked, USC had nearly 17,000 undergrads - as many as most large public schools - and the UC's admission criteria were such that only the top 12% of [all] students in California are admitted, and that's to the system as a whole - UCLA and Berkeley are amongst the most selective universities in the country.

Anonymous said...

UCLA is a better academic institution, although USC has jumped up tremendously in recent years. If life was all about football, I would have picked USC as well. Yes I got in, and I know first hand, UCLA has far higher requirements to get in. Its not a public university that takes everyone. You are NOT simply a number that no one cares about, that is garbage that private schools like USC feed you, and our degree is worth a ton after graduation. We have a pretty amazing alumni network as well. Our departments in nearly every field are nationally ranked...we have several nobel laurettes...and so much that USC doesnt even touch. Yet they brag about football, when they pretty much let anyone who can play on the team, regardless of academic standards. UCLA athletics is still superior btw, 100 national championships and counting, basketball anyone? I honestly cant see how I would pick USC over UCLA considering its over twice the cost for going to school in south central LA...football is not life.

i am currently a senior in the ucla engineering department, and i also chose ucla over usc. i am from out of state, and the academic reputation of ucla is better than usc where i am from. however, just to play devil's advocate, the argument that ucla is a better education for less money is not entirely true. i think it is a better education (although i am biased), but not necessarily cheaper - considering out of state tuition (which is significantly increased by arnold every year), and the scholarship i was offered at usc, it is more expensive to go to ucla. also, rent in westwood is horrible, if you want to include living expenses...

Lawrence said...

UCLA grad here and clearly the women are better looking. Academics is such a toss-up...depends on the student, good students do well wherever they go, luck after school is the key to success. UCLA is always a better basketball program than the football one and vice versa for USC. I concede that easily. But quality of life slides to UCLA. So UCLA wins, 2-1.

I got into both USC and UCLA, but in the end chose FLORIDA. Maybe we can get a UF billboard in LA that says "Titletown: 3000 miles the other way"

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

it's funny how ucla grads always talk about their academic superiority, yet end up working for trojans. weird how that works out, isn't it?

To the lost people from Florida, we're discussing academics here, which SEC schools don't have at all.

The reason why the billboard was placed in Westwood is to remind all the USC students who relocate to Westwood everynight how it could have been if they attended UCLA, but COULD NOT!

Anonymous said...

one more thing, U$C has only one legitimate claim and that is football. thats how it has been and it always will, big whoop. UCLA on the other hand is the elite athletic program of this century. 100 NCAA national titles baby!!!

SC = O.J.

Ah, Ian, you're so bitter about ucla's shrinking academic lead, that you have engaged in psychological projection. While accusing Steve Sample of being an illusionist, you yourself are making up statistics about how much USC exaggerates. You're being just like Mitch Snyder making up a stat about how 2 million people are homeless.

USC uses best practices for SAT scores, an approach shared by almost everyone. UC uses a slightly more conservative approach, but makes up for it by lying to US News about how it attracts more students from the top 10% of their high school class than Harvard, Caltech, Yale, Princeton and all the other schools with much higher SAT scores than ucla.

Ian, your alleged superiority is all that keeps you hanging on, isn't it? How sad. Get a hobby.

Rob said...

Well, said, Robert. How strange that students from a public school would have such an elitist attitude about USC being in a worse neighborhood.

I've seen the panhandlers and bag ladies in Westwood. The difference is that USC became the Time maga/Princeton Review 2000 College of the Year for doing something positive for its community, while ucla kids sniffed at their own community.

Anonymous said...

USC supposedly counts only some of its SAT scores? Wait a minute: Care to check to see if UCLA counts the scores of its football players and donor's kids...?

Marcelo Teson said...

I would argue that while UCLA has historically been the better school academically (with a few exceptions in various specific majors), USC has done a LOT in the last few years to close that gap. At this point I'd consider the two schools to be about level.

I was a USC undergrad, but I'd probably go to UCLA for grad school before I return to USC. and I LOVED my years there. The "living in the ghetto" thing wasn't a big deal at all (at least there's parking), it was a great community of people, super fun. I'm sure UCLA is the same way.

Look! Reasonable and balanced analysis!

Well, I just want to say that I got into BOTH USC and UCLA and CHOSE USC out of both schools. So no we didn't get rejected from UCLA and chose the SC out of desperation. At SC we are a family, unlike at UCLA where I was sent to a minority orientation where we were told how to find a tutor because "Latino students have a higher probability of failing out". Ya, great call to make people feel excluded before they're even at your school, esp. when they got there on their own merit. On the USC campus you feel a sense of community that is far from present at UCLA. Lastly, the location not being the best only makes the rich kids (whom you obviously think comprise the entire USC population, which is far from true as a large percentage is on scholarship) more down to earth and in touch with reality. I'm not saying Westwood isn't nice, but the "ghetto" isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Plus if it's as bad as you say it is and we're still attracting the top academic and athletic talent, we must have something going for us right?

I think the money you pay at USC is really talked about too much, considering no one ever whines about paying that much for other East Coast private schools.

Overall, I'm not trying to say USC is way better than UCLA, just that our athletics program could teach you a little bit and that UCLA needs to relax with all their comments about how they are smarter and we all couldn't get in there because that's just laughable.

Fight On.

My brother's friend went to UCLA directly after high school. He never criticized USC nor insulted it in any manner. My brother's friend knows that the academic standards i.e. high school weighted GPA, SATs, and extracurricular activities of people who got into USC and UCLA were similar.

I went to a community college, and yes it's a joke there. The academic standards at your typical CC is equivalent to high school level AP courses at best. I go to USC. Yup, I got rejected from UCLA. Honestly speaking, the reason I wanted to go to UCLA is because I thought it'd be a more "Asian-friendly" school, and that USC was a "white-washed" school. But before you Bruins act rash and revert to your "SC stands for 'second choice'" BS, be open-minded and consider this. A week before I was going to send in my appeal to UCLA, I was fortunate enough to actually speak to a UCLA admissions officer in person. He told me that my academic standing was fine(3.8 GPA @ CC), however, I lacked in extracirriculars, employment while going to CC, etc. I personally know 3 people who got into UCLA, 2 w/ GPAs lower than mine, and 1 higher than mine. All 3of these people did work, or participate in extracirriculars. However, what you Bruins fail to realize is that these individuals are what we Asians perjoratively call FOBs, or Asian people who've only been in the U.S. a short time and can't speak English. FOBs exploit the community college transfer system as a loophole to bypass SATs or any standardized test that involves college prepatory English. A lot of FOBs plagarize the hell out of each others term papers. Trust me, I've seen this occur so often. The point I'm trying to make is that the vast majority of UCLA acceptees, especially FOBs, from community colleges know how to rig the system to their advantage. There is a reason that Stanford and the Ivies rarely take community college transfers, and it's not only because their undergraduate body is comprised of 10,000 or less. It's contigent on you submitting SAT scores despite you undergoing "college" level academics @ a community "college." UCLA is elite, however, it's not the same caliber as Stanford nor the Ivies. I see the same FOBs who were admitted to UCLA and Cal, but chose USC instead, and they suffer badly b/c the academics here at SC are rigorous and competitive. I highly doubt that the curves, averages and whatever academic measures you want to talk about is higher at UCLA than USC.
Another reason why UCLA is "harder" to get into than USC is because USC's tuition is nearly $40K/yr and UCLA's is $8K/yr. I looked at the numbers and both schools alloted nearly the same number of transfer spots, 2,500. However, UCLA received 13,000+ applicants, and USC about 8,500. Here's the probablities of getting into each school, UCLA: 19%, USC: 29%. These figures aren't exact, just round about. I'm proving that UCLA isn't "harder" to get accepted into b/c it's an intrinsically better school than SC. No, it's because your school is severely overwhelmed by the number applicants b/c of the relatively much cheaper tuition. Whether you believe me or not, I had higher averages and test scores than those 3 aforementioned students at community college on a more consistent basis.

Bruins can try in vain to exploit USC's past reputation for being a "party school" all they want, but it's only a short matter of time unitl UCLA will be exposed as a school that isn't as elite as outsiders perceive them to be.

U all are some dumb mutha fuckers. I have actually attended both USC and UCLA after doing my Bachelors in London. So if anyone is in a position to comment it's me.

UCLA is bullshit, low standards in teaching, some of the buildings are an embarrassment but you wanna talk about USC being in the ghetto.

At least USC have stood their ground. If you people had any intelligence you would know that it's not the geography that's important. It's what you learn and come away with.

Humble is the word that represents USC. Down to the medical services, USC saved my life, UCLA is still trying to figure out what's up. UCLA have the nerve to be snobs and most of the students suck (i guess thay're mad cos' they had to settle for second best).

The experience at USC was far superior to UCLA. Fuck what figures and statistics say, real life experience holds more weight.

hahahahhahaah. i got into both schools, duh. and guess where im sitting at now? ucla. without a doubt, it was a decision that required much consideration. Although USC offered me a full scholarship and the cost of going to UCLA would have therefore been much more expensive, i chose to be a bruin for several important reasons.

the us news rankings does say that USC and UCLA are only 2 rankings apart. however, one MUST consider the fact that UCLA is a public school whose prestige competes with the ivies. I decided to look at the London Times top world universities ranking. UCLA comes in 30th place WORLDWIDE and exceeds CAL by several points and leaves USC in the 120th. Any sensible person would have to accept UCLA's dominating prestige among the myriads of institutions worldwide.

my best friend ,who didn't get into ucla, currently attends USC. so that allows close contact with the trojans at all times. i'm proud to be a Bruin and shes proud to be a trojan. but we both admit, the bruins have much to be proud of and if she could, she would be a bruin herself too :)

A little off topic, Guys... I have a question. Last week I discovered this site:
Rivalspot.com - Playstation tournaments
They say you can play online FIFA Soccer game tournaments on any console for cash... had anyone tried that before? Looks like a cool idea...
Are there any other sites where you can play sports games for real moneys? I Googled and found only Bringit.com and Worldgaming.com but it looks these guys don't specialize in sport gamez. Any suggestions?

Information that informs the public and makes them good citizens is the kind of quality information that one can be proud to call news, and if it ever goes completely out of style, may the Lord help us, for it will be the end of civilization
as we know it. Office goers and people who are travelling
often do not get time to read news from the newspaper or
watch it to get good information they could subscribe for sports SMS alerts.
It's more than just doing the right things or being involved in a good opportunity.

Well, as we know world is changing day by day and its every single move in politics,
business or even entertainment world affects our lives a
lot. Yet while viewers will inevitably make comparisons between Diane Sawyer and Katie Couric, they have very styles, as Diane Sawyer has more of a reputation for a 'harder' journalistic
style. On you left you will notice list of content providers and
