In an announcement that makes you go “huh,” Pop Warner has teamed with Jostens, who has become the “Official Jewelry Provider” of the tyke-football league. So while the 5-15 year-olds will be competing on the field for the Pop Warner Super Bowl, they’ll also be trying to earn rings just like their heroes.
"It's great knowing that Jostens, the manufacturer of 27 of the last 41 NFL Super Bowl rings, will be making our Super Bowl Championship rings and products that will help our participants remember their experiences for a lifetime," said Jon Butler, Executive Director of Pop Warner. While Pop Warner kids might be cheering nation-wide, this has got to be a nightmare for their parents. Why not give them a t-shirt – do they really need rings? Imagine a 7 year-old leads his team to the Pop Warner title. He’s going to want a ring, and his parents likely won’t deny him that. But he’s 7, so what do you do? Buy it fitted to his current finger size, watching him outgrow it within a year? Buy it a few sizes too big? The odds have got to be pretty high that the ring will eventually get lost. And even higher that the kid won’t care about it within a few years.
The deal will clearly be a cash cow for Jostens and Pop Warner. I get that. But c’mon, can’t we all agree this is ridiculous?
